Built after the War of 1812 in order to protect Savannah's port, the fort contained in Fort Pulaski National Monument is most famous for its role in the Civil War. After being taken by Confederate troops in 1861, it was reclaimed by the Union after a long and heavy bombardment in 1862. Later, the fort also acted as a final stop along the Underground Railroad, where slaves were freed after their dangerous travels. Today, visitors can tour the fort, which is an example of military architecture of the 19th century, as well as stop by the visitors center for information about the fort's history. Other common activities at the monument include hiking along the trails that cross over Cockspur Island and McQueens Island, and visiting the Cockspur Island Lighthouse. The park sits about 10 miles east of Savannah, right on the oceanfront, with the fort itself residing on Cockspur Island.
